Come join one of Whitby’s most dysfunctional families and the thickest Whitby police file in one click. Several Longbottom children characters are still open, and given the fact that even mum and dad have lost track of who is theirs and who isn’t, you’re welcome to add others.
 
The parents:
 
Harry Longbottom – Played by Jack
Womanizing bastard. Doesn’t drink as much as his wife, but still drunk more often than he should be. Has a repairs workshop where he does little work and little repairing, but overcharges his (one-time) customers anyway. Frequently supplements his income by even less legal means, and encourages his children to do the same. Actively feeds his children mistrust of authorities, and tells them that as a family they have to look out for one another because nobody else will. Gets so fed up with his wife that he runs out on his family every so often. Always returns after a week or two, because he's just as hopeless on his own. Has a few illegitimate children running around as well.
 
Anita Longbottom – Played by Somniac
Been too drunk to recognize her own children for years. More likely to wear an emergency stash of liquor under her skirt than bloomers. Occasionally trying to get sober since realizing what a mess her children are. Not very successful so far. Would be most likely character to kill Ben Ward if she could see one of him.

William is Bess’ husband and Stephanie’s uncle. This is what I wrote about him in Bess’ profile:


Quote:Bess had just turned twenty when she met her future husband. One of her students was wearing a beautiful bracelet and she asked if she could sketch it. She gave the drawing to the child and the next day, the ten-year-old presented her with a note from her father, the local jeweler, who wished to meet her at his place of business. He said he might want to commission a sketch.


Intrigued, she went to the jewelry store that afternoon. The owner, William St. Clair, told her he was impressed with her skills and inquired as to whether he had ever tried designing jewelry before. He explained that he had been hired to make a special necklace, outlined the requirements, and asked her to draw a few designs. He decided to use one of them and showed her the finished piece. Bess was elated to see one of her drawings brought to life.


Over the next year, he bought more of her sketches and the two of them became close. William was fourteen years older than Bess and unhappily married with two young daughters. Though they tried to fight their attraction to each other, they eventually began an affair when Bess was twenty-one. A year later, his wife passed away from a short illness around the same time her father died. They consoled each other and were married as soon as the mourning period was over. Their first son was born in 1885 and their second in 1888.


The jewelry business thrived, especially after William’s sister-in-law Caroline, a wealthy heiress, wore a necklace that Bess had designed to a fancy soiree in London and made them popular among the upper class. In 1891, Caroline and her husband were killed in a carriage accident. Their eleven-year-old daughter Stephanie went to live with Caroline’s sister and her husband in the country, but ran away six months later. Bess drew a sketch of her and a search began. She was finally found three years later traipsing across a London stage.


William brought her back to live with his family. With the addition of the girl and her governess, they needed more space and have recently moved a lovely new house that sits close to the seashore. Bess thought that her childbearing years were over, but she is now four months pregnant with her third child.



The only other thing set in stone about him is that he loves Bess and will never cheat on her. Because William is such an important part of Bess’ life, please contact me if you are interested in playing him.



Stepdaughter, 23-25


This is Bess’ oldest stepdaughter. She was one of Bess’ students and 8-10 when Bess sketched her bracelet at school. WANTED:

I imagine the Wards have loads of uncles, aunts, and cousins. Both Ben and Hannah come from fishing families, so their relatives are likely fisherfolk as well. Some relatives may have abandoned fishing and tried their luck in a different industry.

Ben’s relatives:
Ben is the second of 5 children (two boys, three girls). The father was an alcoholic, a very unpleasant man when drunk, who drank most of the income. He fell into harbour on a drunk night when Ben was nine, and drowned. After that, the family did better. Their mother was caring but strict and demanding, desiring to keep the children from following their father’s path.
Ben’s younger brother, Paul, died several years ago along with one of his sons, Matthew, and Ben's son, Tom, when their boat capsized in a storm and they drowned (Ben and his brother wouldn’t put their sons in one boat, so that not the whole family was lost in the case of calamity). Another son, Luke, who was in the boat with Ben and Simon, survived. I imagine he now works in the same boat as Ben and William Ward, though perhaps he works an own boat with his younger brothers? That’s up to you.

So that gives us:

Hannah’s relatives:
Some of the mother’s relatives come from the nearby fishing town of Robin Hood’s Bay, though some may have moved to Whitby for the better market. These relatives are open to fill in as you like. So if you have an existing character that might reasonably be related, or have a character idea, here’s a chance for a pre-existing connection.

Hannah’s relatives:
Some of the mother’s relatives come from the nearby fishing town of Robin Hood’s Bay, though some may have moved to Whitby for the better market. These relatives are open to fill in as you like. So if you have an existing character that might reasonably be related, or have a character idea, here’s a chance for a pre-existing connection.


NB: Though most characters are open to fill in as you like, please run your ideas past me before playing, so we can make sure it’s consistent with the existing characters.

Raised traditionally Conservative Jewish, most Meijers probably feel uncomfortable if they skip Shabbat – but beyond that, their level of observance is open. They had an English nanny, and so all speak comfortable English (perhaps even more so than their native Yiddish or Czech).

Currently, Zechariah has 2 older sisters, 1 elder brother (with the brother being 3rd born), 1 younger sister (born after him, the 4th born), and 3 younger brothers.

Ruth herself has a lot of free time and vacations frequently to visit her siblings and extended family. Her relationship with their father is likely cordial, but strained, given how much control he had over all her major life decisions (what hobbies to partake in, who to marry, etc.). Boisterous and extroverted, Ruth would be known to German circles as a singer, harp player, or for some other musical aptitude that puts her up front.

Whenever their father bemoans his sons falling short of his expectations, their mother is fond of saying “they take after you” whether it is true or not. Nesah has also occasionally weathered this ‘compliment’. She and Zechariah learned piano together, and he writes her frequently. The pressure for her to marry and settle down is there, but Nesah might have other plans – plans she may or may not have roped one of her siblings in Whitby into.
